Initiate Self-Destruct Recap

Same night, new time! Did everyone remember that Batwoman was moved to 9pm tonight? We are coming off of a week hiatus so we wouldn't be surprised if a few might have forgotten. That said, tonight's episode was a great return! With Jacob continuing to fall into the grasp of Snakebite, Batwoman working to get her ex-girlfriend Angelique back (which if you missed it, we had a wonderful interview with the actor, Bevin Bru who plays Angelique which you can check out below) and Alice remembering her time with Ocean, there was a lot to unpack. Here's what stood out to us:

  1. Kate Kane!: We finally know what Black Mask's plan for Kate Kane was. He blames the Crows for the death of his daughter so he took Jacob's daughter as a replacement. Enigma has been working to reprogram Kate to live and act like Black Mask's daughter. Kate has continued to fight the reprogramming, but two taps from Enigma and Black Mask is able to have his daughter back, the only thing they couldn't erase was Kate's voice. That remains hers. Alice escapes a hotel room where she and Ocean spent the night. Sophie, now knowing who Batwoman is, is trying to run a little interference on the Crows who have Batwoman's DNA sample. Batwoman's identity will be known in a few hours. Ryan wants to use the time left to get Angelique, Luke doesn't want the Bat Legacy to be destroyed. The team is divided. Batwoman runs into Alice and the pair work together to find Angelique and Ocean.
  2. DNA Debacle: Luke tasks Mary to deliver a hard drive that will scramble the results of Batwoman's DNA. They have to plug it into Jacob's computer though which is why Mary is there. Black Mask has tasked Angelique and Ocean to make Snakebite on camera so he can see the process and repeat. Alice and Batwoman storm the facility to free the ones they love. Batwoman double crosses Alice though and handcuffs her to a fence. Only Batwoman can break in.
  3. Two Front Crisis: Batwoman is working to free Ocean and Angelique while Mary distracts Jacob at her new facility. Sophie works with Luke to delete Batwoman's DNA but in doing so, all the cases The Crows have would be closed due to corruption. Sophie seeks another solution. Meanwhile, Kate, now believing she is Black Face's daughter, finds Alice captured handcuffed to a fence. She doesn't kill Alice but says she'll be back for her.
  4. Escape: Batwoman is able to smash the new Snakebite. She get's Angelique and Alice out. As Ocean and Angelique escape, Kate shows up and engages Batwoman. The two Batwomen fight it out. Kate gets the upper hand on Batwoman but Alice arrives and knocks her out. Reprogrammed Kate isn't down for long. She gets the drop on Alice and might kill her. Batwoman has the ability to stop her but she quotes Alice and walks out, leaving Alice at the mercy of the reprogrammed Kate.

In the final wrap-up moments, Sophie discovers that Jacob is on Snakebite. Sophie takes this to Mary who's new facility is supercharged with new equipment. Angelique, now free, heads to Ryan's apartment. Angelique cut a deal with the Feds and is going back into witness protection but at the federal level. She offers for Ryan to come with her into the protection. Ryan declines. Alice is captured and taken to Black Mask.

I was trying to figure out why Roman blamed Kate for Circe's death. I was wondering if it was somehow tied to Kate breaking into to Arkham with Alice, then trapping Alice. I wonder if Roman had her on surveillance and Circe possibly died off screen during this event?
From what I gather, he also blames the Crows, which is why he's gotten Jacob addicted to Snakebite. But, yeah, now that you mention it, it doesn't make sense that he would go to such lengths to make everyone believe Kate was dead, then spend months torturing Kate, if he only blamed Jacob. Maybe he somehow learned that Kate was Batwoman? Hmmm....

Hopefully, we will get more insight into why Roman blames Kate and the Crows.

Roman told Kate-Circe that she got her burns when escaping from Arkham - I'm betting the real Circe was killed during the mass breakout in ep #119 when Alice opened all the locks once she got her hands on Lucas' journal. So really, Alice is the one responsible for Circe's death. I wonder if Kate-Circe will discover that while torturing Alice? I wonder if Alice and Circe met while in Arkham?

Ryan took off her mask in front of Alice, so Alice already knows what Ryan looks like. But she doesn't know Ryan's name, so she doesn't "know" who BW2.0 is... yet.

I am not sure Alice doesn't know Ryan's name as she admitted she knew Ryan's mother's name.

Lots of questions still to be answered.

One issue I had - BW2.0 destroyed the batch of snakebite that Ocean and Angelique just made, but did any of them think to grab the camera before running out the door?!? And speaking of, the recipe requires the Desert Rose - presumably, the roots they were chopping. Did Ocean think to pocket some to heal himself and take back to Coryana?

Hmmm... I thought Ocean told Alice that Safiyah sent him after the last remaining desert rose plant and they suspected Batwoman had it... How would they have had desert rose roots to chop up for Snakebite?

I wouldn't expect Alice to recognize Kate's eyes immediately, but I did expect some small inkling to spark on Alice's part right at the very end as Kate got up close and stared at Alice. Ep #216 is titled "Rebirth", followed by ep #217 "Kane, Kate", so I'm guessing Kate will get her memories back at the end of #216, which is 4 episodes away, so they can't rush it too much, right?

What an episode!
My review can be found on the forum now.
And yeah, the amounts of funny lines in this one was rather spectacular @Catpat!
Batwoman had never so much screentime in an episode, I love that!
Plus the action scenes were really intense :-)

Some notable plot points and observations:

Kate's has severe burns and a damaged larynx and that explains the lack of tattoos and voice differences. ✔ and ✔! Wallis delivered a decent American accent.

How great was it to see Wallis Day's name in the opening credits?

I was at first annoyed at Ryan for again saying Alice killed her mom. She didn't, members of her street urchin Wonderland gang did, not Alice. She showed up after-the-fact. Points for recognizing the distinction later in the episode. More points for Alice admitting she remembered Ryan's mom, but does that also mean Alice knows Ryan in BW 2.0?

Kate seemed to wince at the pain from the burns when Enigma pressed her arm/wrist, as you'd expect. But, Cersei-Kate seemed to feel no pain. What drugs was she on? Then, ouch! Alice clunked Cersei-Kate pretty hard on the head and she bounced right back. Seriously, what drugs? How much trauma can poor Kate's head take?

Has anyone been keeping up with Alice's kill count this season?

The unexpected Alice/Ryan team up really worked.

The way Cersei- Kate looked at Alice, was it triggering her memory?

I watched Alice's face expressions but I saw no indicator she recognized the eyes behind Cersei-Kate's mask.

Loved Sophie busting Mary for being team bat and how Mary squirmed to explain it away.

It's good Mary reopened her clinic... but when does she find time for school?

I like Jacob being snakebite addicted. It will give him a good story and possibly bring him and Mary closer.

Bye, bye Angelique. Off to witness protection for now anyway.

My pet peeve... that voice modulator. It started out great. Ryan using it with Sophie and then Alice. But, then apparently turned it off in the Batmobile with Alice and then on the false face walkie-talkie. Sloppy! But, glad that was my biggest disappointment this week.

Really great episode tonight.Very interesting way to re-introduce Kate to the story.I'm calling it now.Alice will find out who Black Mask's "daughter" is first.

Yes, I think Alice will trigger Cersei-Kate's memories, like Ocean triggering Alice's and vice-versa. Then, I think Alice will sense Kate. I kept waiting for Alice to make a noticing facial expression when she was looking into Cersei-Kate's eyes, but that didn't happen.
