Is This The New Batwoman and Other Rumors

The recasting of Batwoman seems to be continuing via the new character route and not recasting Kate Kane. Several petitions have gone up to ask the show to please consider keeping Kate Kane as the character who is Batwoman but the casting call for the new character of Ryan Wilder is still being read for. In some of the readings for the part, dialogue would seem to suggest that not only will Kate Kane die is some fashion, but the notorious Scarecrow villain will appear to ravage fear upon Gotham. Tying this villain personally to the new character of Ryan comes from Scarecrow killing Ryan's mother. That acts as her motivation for wanting to put on the Batsuit. News of the Scarecrow's involvement with Ryan comes to us from DanielRPK and TheDirect

On the other hand, many actors have been expressing interest in taking the part of Batwoman. Notably Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Stephanie Beatriz and Krypton's Wallis Day. While those actors may be taking note of the part, The Cinema Spot has Vanessa Morgan being eyed for the role. Vanessa is no stranger to the CW. She plays Toni Topaz on Riverdale. She recently criticized the network and show for not giving equal pay and story-time to black characters.

[I'm} tired of how Black people are portrayed in Media, tired of us being portrayed as thugs, dangerous or angry scary people. Tired of us also being used as sidekick non-dimensional characters to our white leads. Or only used in the ads for diversity but not actually in the show.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Riverdale creator did respond to Vanessa's critique:

We hear Vanessa. We love Vanessa. She’s right. We’re sorry and we make the same promise that we did to her. We will do better to honor her and the character she plays. As well as all of our actors and characters of color. CHANGE is happening and will continue to happen. Riverdale will get bigger, not smaller. Riverdale will be part of the movement, not outside it.

Vanessa is still on Riverdale which could make the jump to Batwoman difficult but, showrunners for Riverdale have announced a time jump from season 4 to the new season 5 which could make writing Vanessa's character out of the show a lot easier.

UPDATE: Showrunner and Executive Producer Caroline Dries has made a statement on her Twitter account to help clear up some of the rumors going around. This will be the first official statement from a showrunner since Ruby Rose's departure, The statement is as follows:

As a lesbian who's been working as a writer for the past fifteen years, I'm well aware of the "Bury Your Gays" trope and I have no interest in participating in it. That's why it's important to me as the showrunner to clarify any misinformation out there about Kate Kane and recasting Batwoman. Like you, I love Kate Kane - she's the reason I wanted to do the show. We'll never erase her. In fact, her disappearance will be one of the mysteries of season two. I don't want to give away any of our surprises, but to all our devoted fans, please know that LGBTQ+ justice is at the very core of what Batwoman is and we have no intention of abandoning that.

WTHH.... ""Crisis on Infinite Earths" .... The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) during the crossover's second hour, reassuring with his cosmic omnipotence that Kate Kane is "the Bat of the Future"."

I hope Kate missing is a mystery that will be resolved early in the season, prior to the Crossover and we have Kate back for it.

Rachel Skarsten should get top billing until they recast Kate Kane.

If she has lingering issues with her back this whole new character thing could be a way of giving her a time off to heal. Ruby needing time to heal could explain everything that’s happened.
I noticed during the season finale that she was favoring her right arm thruout the episode - on the subway, she was wincing and holding her right side after the fight; in the batcave, Mary tells her she's dislocated her right shoulder (which could have been a drop in scene to explain why Kate was favoring her right arm); on the rooftop, she shakes hands with Jacob using her left hand; on the field during the final fight sequence, she pulls out the staff with her left hand (she's always used the right in past episodes); and as she talks Titan down, she's blocking him with her left arm. I'm thinking Ruby injured herself, or maybe those two ruptured discs from last year are causing issues, and that's why she left. As you say, Brierrose, she can't heal if she keeps getting hurt.

My wild theory: Somehow I think they already have an actress for Kate Kane, but she isn't available at the moment, but will then show up later on at the end of season 2.
Yeah, I had the exact same thought. Great minds....! ;-) I feel like a great weight has been lifted, and now I can thoroughly enjoy season 2 knowing that Kate WILL BE BACK!

I think it would be hilarious if It turns out Kate needs to go to Alice for a new face for som reason.
The only hiccup in that is that the faces are temporary and glued on. That would be weird, tho, wearing a skin mask underneath the cowl... one good right hook, and the whole jaw would slip... which... would be hilarious! :D

I'm wondering why does Kate disappear? Maybe, because Alice is gunning for her, she leaves to protect everyone else, so they don't get caught in the crossfire? I wonder if she'll disappear as a result of the crossover with Superman & Lois? Since both shows are premiering in January, is it the season openers that will be the cross-over, or later episodes?!? Damn... this just raises more questions! :o
Fingers crossed... It could be a strategy to get bumps in viewers. First people tune in to see Ryan introduced. Then they tune in to see the new Kate. Plus the crossover.

I don't think Vanessa Morgan, if cast, will be permanently Batwoman. She is engaged to be married to Michael Kopach, so she does not meet the LGBTQ casting promise from both Dries and Berlanti.

Perhaps Kate is off searching for the real Bruce Wayne, but she could be kidnapped by the mysterious Safiya... The latter could find Jacob and Alice working with Team Bat to get Kate back. I know Dries will come up with something exciting.

The plot thickens, Kate’s disappearance is a mystery. Will Kate Kane as a character return. The conspiracy theorist in me could even imagine Ruby coming back. That is my hope. Ryan steps in for a "hot minute" during Kate's mysterious absence-- possibly to investigate faux Bruce Wayne-- and she impersonates Batwoman to get to Scarecrow and then Kate returns and takes her under her batwing.
