Rule #1 Recap

IT IS A WHOLE NEW BALLGAME! Ryan has cemented her place as the New Batwoman and she is finally healed from the Kryptonite poisoning (at least we hope), but as we all found out last week, our journey with Kate Kane continues, even if all our favorite characters think she is dead. But that's not all, we don't know what Safiyah might do now that her precious plant crop has been destroyed, let alone how the introduction of Black Mask will change the streets of Gotham, here's what stood out to us:

  1. Funeral for a Friend: With all the evidence pointing to Kate being dead, Jacob and friends hold a funeral for Kate. We find out that Kate is actually in the same position that Beth was in, her face is burned badly and she is being held by Black Mask. The GCPD is waging a war against Snakebite and they are noting that Batwoman is helping. Ryan's ex goes to try and win Ryan back. She says she's getting out of the drug dealing business. Alice is losing her mind not having a direction against Kate anymore. Drug dealers from the False-Face society take out the commissioner of the GCPD to send a message and Ryan's ex was driving.
  2. A Brazen Murder: The city is on high alert after the very well planned murder of The GCPD Commissioner. Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, uses his business status to offer help to law enforcement on tv. A young woman who was tagging the police station saw who killed the commissioner, and she comes forward to Sophie but is scared to give her name. The False-Face society attacks but Batwoman is there to step in.
  3. Driving the Car: Ryan's ex said she wants out of the gang but they want her to do one last thing. She drove the car that delivered the murderers to the Commissioner. Team Batwoman is ready to bring in Angelique but Ryan wants to give her more time. Mary and Luke aren't budging. Mary will give Angelique one hour before she calls the cops on Ryan's ex, Angelique, on her own.
  4. Jacob in Mourning: Poor Jacob has gone through hell with the loss of his daughters. He isn't going to take anything at face value anymore. He tasks Julia to hunt down all angles. The NTSB thinks that Kate's plane was hit by lightning but Jacob needs an enemy to take down. Angelique decides to call Batwoman for help but when Batwoman arrives, it's too late, the False Face Society has captured her. Black Mask puts a knife to her neck and shows her a dead member of his gang and says "that's what it looks like to leave the False Face Society".
  5. Black Mask: Batwoman heads to save Angelique, she gets overpowered by the gang so she is captured and put on a saw mill that will cut her in half. Black Mask reveals that he blames the previous Batwoman for the death of his daughter. He's unleashing this madness to change the system. Luke calls in Sophie when Batwoman's mic cuts out. Sophie is able to save Batwoman and Black Mask retreats. Sophie and Batwoman are going to use Angelique as a witness against Black Mask and The False Face Society but they will need to hide her and keep her safe.

In the final wrap up moments of the show, Angelique doesn't follow through. She confesses to the murder solely. Angelique owns up to the murder so that Ryan wouldn't be targeted by Black Mask. Julia begins to investigate Kate's crash but she already started earlier and for some reason couldn't remember talking to those folks. What is causing her memory loss? Ryan makes new rules to balance power on team Batwoman. Alice is having a mental breakdown and digs up her dead cat. Her vision of her younger sister Kate drives her to forget Kate ever existed. Back at Black Mask's place, Enigma shows up to reprogram Kate Kane. Her face is badly damaged and seeing her face again might lead to memory recall. Enigma begins her work.

Who was impersonating Julia and why? So glad Julia is back!
So Kate head injury involved losing a piece of her skull? Ouch!
I think the whole story that Julia gave us was fabricated by Enigma (skull fragments and all). Julia's real investigation got too close to the Black Mask (cuz he was probably responsible for Kate's plane going down), and he decided to use her to shut down any further investigation.

Quoting CatPat:
do we know when Wallis makes her full-on debut?
There's nothing on IMDB, so...?!? They can't keep her under wraps forever, so I'm hoping this next episode or the one after.

Given that Sophie has been seeing the Crows for what they are, I think she's going to become the next GCPD Commissioner!

I was totally off thinking someone was impersonating Julia, as it appears she had her memory wiped. It does look like Black Mask and/or Enigma was behind it.

Kate does have a head injury, so I think Black Mask and/ or Enigma somehow used her DNA to make it look like she died and they found her remains. Clearly Black Mask has significant reach.

I was thinking Jacob may step back from the Crows when he learns Kate is alive and try to reconnect with his daughters... all 3 of them, paving the way for Sophie to take over the Crows and reimage them. But, I like the idea of her as the new Commissioner. That had not occurred to me.

I look forward to Wallis Day making her debut as Kate Kane, but it looks like she will likely not remember who she is and will be manipulated by Black Mask and Enigma. It will be a long road ahead before Kate Kane is back. I just hope they eventually do allow Kate Kane to be Kate Kane again.

[quote name="CatPat"]The opening monologue was touching at first and I like that Ryan dedicated the desert rose to Kate as well as her mom, but the rest of it got prickly for me.

I liked how they intertwined Alice's and Ryan's dialogues, especially saying the same words with VERY different meanings.

Quoting CatPat:
Alice's tea party with young Kate was interesting. Is Alice's finally coming to terms with her emotions?
Under the circumstances (Ruby leaving), I think using young Kate was the next best thing, and rather appropriate, given that Alice is hiding out at the Cartwright house. But no, I don't think Alice is coming to terms with her emotions. She said it herself, she's having another psychotic break. But given recent events, I think Alice's character is going to change.

Quoting CatPat:
I really don't sense any on-screen chemistry between Ryan and Angelique, so I am not very invested.
Agreed. But then, I don't think Ryan is a strong enough character to be the main lead, and I don't for a minute buy Angelique wanting out, so, very not invested!

Welcome back Athena69!

Yes, the technique used to intertwine Ryan's and Alice's dialogues was well executed and very effective

I think Alice has much to face and comes to term with... she knows Safiyah manipulated her memories and she thinks Kate is dead. I can she her questioning everything. I think this may start her transition to Red Alice.

I am having trouble accepting Ryan. On the surface, she is likeable. But, she does not embody a dark knight. I think the problem is, she is in Kate's shadow, they have given her Kate's hand-me-downs: the batsuit, the bar, the apartment.... Mary is somewhat a sister and they look to be toying with the idea if a Ryan-Sophie match up. A total Kate to Ryan transfer, which I don't like. They should give Ryan her own voice and secret identity.

Some good moments to propel the new arc... I liked a lot, but not 100%... 4 out of 6 stars... on the Arrowverse grading curve.

I am a little surprised that the opening did not pick up immediately after the previous episode and focus on saving Ryan with the desert rose. Instead, it was "understood ".

The opening monologue was touching at first and I like that Ryan dedicated the desert rose to Kate as well as her mom, but the rest of it got prickly for me.

The defund the police issue has two distinct sides, each with merit. I don't think it shouldn't be used casually as a plot device, as it was here.

I loved how quick Mary identified the tag and Luke's reaction... priceless.

Alice's tea party with young Kate was interesting. Is Alice's finally coming to terms with her emotions?

The Black Mask mask was not as cool looking in the actual episode as I thought it would be based on the stills. He is quite sinister however...

The voice modulation was back and then gone again. Some consistency would be nice.

I really don't sense any on-screen chemistry between Ryan and Angelique, so I am not very invested.

Who was impersonating Julia and why? So glad Julia is back!

So Kate head injury involved losing a piece of her skull? Ouch! Clearly Kate will not know what from what... do we know when Wallis makes her full-on debut?

So, the new foe is Enigma, as expected... but not at all what I expected!
