At the beginning of "The Un-birthday Present" during Kate and Beth's first encounter, Kate mentions Sophie's name, but Beth does not recognize it.

At the end of "Take Your Choice" Beth and Kate are discussing the fact that on Beth's earth, Kate has a soulmate...

Does this mean that Sophie is not Kate's soulmate?

From the sound of it, some folx are assuming that Soulmate means romantic partner. Whereas this could be the case, it’s nice to think, even if briefly, they might let Kane be happy with a healthy and supportive relationship, Soulmate could also be just a very good/close friend. Also, you can have more than one. So in the close friend category, Fox and Mary are great candidates for that as both challenge Kane to be a better version of herself and have an understanding of her past, present and struggles into the future. They both have a desire to invest time into her and she into them (hopefully Kane will start doing so a little more with Mary here soon, though). There is also the potential for that good friend being Kara Danvers as it has been already hinted at that Batwoman and Supergirl as the World’s Finest are supposed to grow their friendship as Flash and Arrow had done. As always, it could also just be a character that exists on another show that Kane hasn’t met or gotten to know yet or someone that has yet to be introduced from the DC Universe.

As for the romantic interests, Kane left Montoya in the comics cause Montoya was closeted, which is a storyline they are already exploring through Moore’s character, and Kane didn’t want to live her life that way. In the recent episode (spoiler alert) Batmoore have a conversation about being unable to have a relationship with a woman in mask cause Moore was still living in her own. So, this could be a nod to that character story arc from the comics with Montoya.

Sawyer was already introduced in Supergirl as Alex Danvers’s girlfriend for a minute though there were some changes from the cannon version of her. For example Maggie was a mother, daughter’s name was Jamie, in the comic and Sawyer, in the series, didn’t want kids which is why Alex and she broke up. Sawyer also initially worked in Metropolis in the Comics and eventually went to Gotham as head of the Major Crimes Unit where she met Kane at a ball (DC Comics 856 they both wore a tux), started dating, eventually Kane told her she was Batwoman, they got engaged (issue 17) and moved in together. But despite all of that, as was already mentioned, they failed to tie the knot (DC had said they didn’t want the marriage in the comic), and a “noble sacrifice” was invented. Kane starts having dreams of endangering Maggie and Jamie and, on top of that, Sawyer’s ex husband was homophobic and thought Kane would be a bad influence on Sawyer’s daughter so Kane said if she left Sawyer then Sawyer’s ex would drop the custody battle. She leaves a Dear John letter for Sawyer explaining what she did and leaves. (Issue 34) As for already having been introduced, they could blame the multiverse and either have a different version of Sawyer or just bring back Floriana Lima and augment the character a bit ( or not and let the feathers fall where they do).

Romantically, Kane has quite a few girlfriends, including Safiyah (whom she sets free from prison in the Rebirth series) and it has been suggested Montoya might be making a come back in the Rebirth series as well. Her role as Question and her involvement with the GCPD would definitely be a boon for the writing team to work with not to mention give team Batwoman a nice inside at the GCPD. Besides, the people need the GCPD to start getting cleaned up a bit which means either Montoya, Sawyer (who was brought in because of the corruption in the comics), Gordon is coming back (he eventually took over from Sawyer), or maybe even Barbara Gordon depending on what Rabbit Hole you venture down. All of which would be helpful allies. No matter what, can’t wait to see it all. Great discussion!

Attached are some screen caps from the comics of Kane/Swayer’s relationship through the new 52.

Yeah, and then DC comics got cold feet and they weren't "allowed" to marry in the comics.
Maggie would be a great addition to the cast, but I read that there maybe problems since that character was already in the Supergirl TV show. I don't know if the will/can add them to the Batwoman TV show as well.

@Siggi I agree that, at this junction, Moore and Kane both have some growth to do before they would be good in a relationship together. That being said, people change as they experience life and can choose to become better versions of themselves. Who those people are, who Moore and Kane choose to become, could be good together as a romantic couple eventually.

As for Moore’s character, I hope she does stay on the show because I think her character is fantastic and helps present a realistic cross-section from the LGBTQ+ community about how not everyone does have a safe environment to come out in nor may they have helpful supports. I know in my case, for example, I did not have a safe nor supportive environment to come out in and sometimes seeing shows these days where, everyone is suddenly so cool with it all, makes some people think that homophobia must not exist anymore. Whereas I would love for this to be the case, the reality is, homophobia is alive and well and can exist in the places that you would hope for support, love and understanding the most. As hard as it can be for me to watch some of those scenes exploring Moore’s character, I feel that the representation of that dilemma, trying to find yourself through that level of adversity from within her own family, is important for people to see and understand.

Which makes me applaud Tandy even more so in her portrayal honestly, because she would of have to of known that, walking into the character, how hard it was going to be for the target audience to respond to and that there would be a large number of people who would react negatively because she wasn’t out, loud and proud from the get-go. They touched on this with Parker in Episode 10: "How Queer Is Everything Today", when Parker explained that she didn’t have a safe environment to come out in and her girlfriend had outed her to her parents because she thought Parker should be out. In these times we would like to think this could be the norm for everyone but, with my own past as a reference and with having worked with several kids from my own relatively remote area who identify as LGBTQ+ who do not have safe homes to go back to, we don’t, as they demonstrated. I applaud the writer’s in their realism of our current environment and hope they never lose sight of that. Even if it is hard for me to watch, scenarios like this and these kinds of character development is why I continue to love this show.

Does this mean that Sophie is not Kate's soulmate?

Yeah, I caught those little details, too. Personally, I'm hoping that that is the case, cuz, it's so easy for Sophie to lie that she can't be trusted. That is a huge red flag for any relationship. I love Kate's character, and Sophie is great as one of the Crows, but I just don't feel there's any romantic chemistry between the two.
Maybe, on Beth's Earth, Kate and Luke were an item?!? Beth did ask what Luke's deal was, right before talking about Kate's soulmate...

I somehow think that Kate's soulmate will be introduced at the very end of season 1 or at the beginning of season 2.
Sophie is a Crow and the Crows/Jacob think that Batwoman is the enemy.
So I think they will be together for a few episodes but in the end they don't fit together in the long run.
I wouldn't even bet that Sophie is still on the show in season 2.
But let's see....

Really? Why do you say that?

I've never read the comics, so I don't know what characters the writers could pull from, but what I have learned is that Kate never settled down for very long mostly cuz she kept picking women who ended up being villains (in the comics, anyway).

I doubt that Julia Pennyworth is her soul mate, partly cuz of their past and partly cuz the CW really likes bi-racial couples, but I predict they'll hook up briefly. And hopefully Julia will become a permanent member of the Bat Team.

Actually Beth never saw Sophie's face on Earth-Prime so we could not know if Sophie was the mentioned Soulmate. Because maybe on other earths she will have different name.
But we still have to wait and see. In the comic Kate was with Maggie and Renee.

^ Good points!
Yeah, I guess Soulmate can be interpreted in different ways, but I guess here in the topic it is meant like "they were destined to get together".
I don't know what the writers come up with in this show, but so far I stick to my idea, that Sophie and Batwoman/Kate aren't a good match as Sophie is a crow, and they "have" to have some distance between them.

After watching some of Supergirl season 2, I like Maggie Sawyer's character and think she would get along well with Kate. The fact that Maggie knows who Kara Danvers/Supergirl is would help with Kate being willing to trust Maggie w/ the knowledge of Batwoman.

As for Kate and Sophie, regardless of if they get together or not, there needs to be some resolution to their relationship or neither will ever move on.

@Ravansol - well said! While it's true that one's sexual preference (or race, or religion) ~shouldn't~ matter, it's a very sad commentary on our society today that it still does. Some may gripe at the CW for being so heavy-handed, but I applaud them (and the actors) for being brave enough to portray these issues in a responsible way, cuz it's gonna take this kinda of in-your-face exposure to get thru to some people (and some people need to be hit over the head a little more than others!).
